Some LED lamps may offer a drying time within 60 seconds to 5 minutes, but if you have thicker layers of gel nail polish it may take longer to cure.

Method 4:

Leave your nails under fast blowing air

When there is a need to quickly dry out nail polish, it is better to keep them under faster-blowing air, it can be the fan as well.


Though, it is important to note that when you have a good nail polish it gives the best color on your nails. But it is also a fact that if you are in a hurry, you may mess-up the nails up by scrambling and smudging them together due to quick moves right after the application without analyzing them.

  • It is always better to apply thin layers of nail polish because thin layer lacquer or gel nail polish dries out quickly and efficiently.

Yes, it’s a robotic vacuum that sweeps the hardwood until it gleams. And we usually let it run while we’re out running errands. That’s because it’s a little noisy on bare floors. But the investment is worth it since this is a task that needs to be frequently done.

A robot maintains our hardwood floor each day. We’ve programmed a set schedule for it to follow. Then, at the end of the week, it only takes a few minutes to touch up the corners of the rooms with one of the best vacuums for bare floors. Of course, it’s also important to empty the robot’s bin and check the filters and brushes.

We’ve discovered that there are at least three benefits to cleaning our floors the lazy way.

The primary benefit is that our home stays cleaner. There’s never any reason to be embarrassed if someone drops by unexpectedly. And it’s pleasant to walk around barefoot when the floors are clean.

Tomato Varieties You May Want to Try

Many have asked what tomatoes are best for Florida? The list is long but I can tell you what I am growing and why. My list is long too and most are well-tested plantings in my yard. Some we like for flavor and others just

their vigor. At least one is a favorite of friends so I just have to grow that one and it is not that easiest to grow.

It is interesting to note that even gardeners who don’t like to eat tomatoes like to grow them. It gives them bragging rights. I like to grow and eat them all, that is why I plant so many each year. Plus, I often trial varieties for companies and friends. Usually I only grow the indeterminate types which means they keep growing and fruiting throughout the season. Every so often I will plant a determinate type that quickly sets fruits and ripens them. They do not continue to grow or set many more fruits. If a tomato is nematode resistant, I put an ‘N’ next to the name. Many are resistant to other pests too.

All my studies show the most reliable tomatoes are the cherry or small fruited types. They are vigorous and the caterpillars do not seem to like them that much. They also seem to be the first to start ripening. Below are the ones I am planting.

Most gardeners like the slicers or big fruited types too. They are always a challenge as they seem to take longer to ripen their fruits and the caterpillars love them. It fruits later and grows extra tall but my friends love this heirloom variety

Over the last few years I have been testing the new grafted varieties. They are new to us but have been used by especially the greenhouse growers for a while. They are vigorous and all I have tested have good nematode resistance. As a nematologist once told me, ‘they seem to out grow the pests.’ I look at the roots of all I plant when removed from the garden and these have been pretty nematode free. Below are the ones I am testing this spring. The plants should arrive at the end of February.

Is It a Good Tree or a Bad Tree?

There are a lot of ways we can compare and describe trees in our yards. Are they tall or short? Are they thin or fat? Are they deciduous or coniferous?

But you don’t necessarily evaluate trees as being either good or bad. Unless they happen to look like this:

However, you can use these simple adjectives when discussing whether a tree is a danger to your home. Here are some ways that “bad” trees can cause homeowner headaches (and how to know if the tree in your yard might do damage later on):

1. Falling limbs. Certain types of trees — like poplars or cottonwoods — can become hazardous once they die. That’s because their limbs get very brittle and tend to snap off in a windstorm or snowstorm. If a big limb is hanging over your home, then that’s a problem waiting to happen.

2. Falling trees. Pine trees and others like them have small root balls when compared to their wind resistance. Translation: high winds can uproot these trees and send them toppling over. If your home is near a large or leaning pine tree, you should consider calling a tree service.

3. Clogged gutters. If tree branches are hovering over your home’s roofline, your gutters could fill up with leaves or pine needles in no time. The debris could clog the gutters up and prevent rainwater from flowing into the downspouts. Where does the water go instead? Over the edges of your gutters and onto the ground right next to your foundation.

4. Critter highways. Another problem presented by overhanging limbs is that they become thoroughfares for squirrels, rodents, raccoons, and other critters to reach your roof and/or gutters. Then these pests tend to nest, burrow, and even invade your chimney and attic.

5. Wire problems. You may have telephone or electrical wires that run over your home. If tree branches grow into these wires, a windstorm could either short out or take down the wires, forcing you to call the utility company for a repair job. There’s even a chance the live wires could get cut and start a fire.

6. Worn out roof shingles. If tree branches are close enough to your house to actually be touching the roof, they start to scrape the shingles when the wind blows. Not only does this create a really annoying sound, it also wears down the shingles and causes roof leaks.

7. Foundation problems. If you plant a sapling right next to your home, it may look cute and/or provide some shade. But its roots may also grow under your home’s foundation and cause buckling, cracking, and separation. Then you’re paying thousands of dollars for foundation repair work.

8. Sewer problems. Like your foundation, a poorly-located tree could spread its roots into your sewer lines. Then you have plumbing problems which can get really messy very quickly.

To avoid these difficulties, make sure you consider all of these issues before you plant a new tree. You should also take a look at all of your existing trees and determine if they are a threat to cause damage to your home. And unless it’s an easy fix, don’t hesitate to call a professional tree service to take care of cutting high limbs or removing larger trees.

Finally, repeat this inspection at least once a year to make sure tree problems don’t sneak up on you. It’s much easier (and less expensive) to take care of tree issues before they cause substantial problems down the road.

Acrylic and Polyurethane: Which Is the Best Workshop Floor Paint?

The best workshop floor is obviously one that fits the type of work performed inside the area, said work, of which can be as a woodworking shop, an automotive restoration shop, or a visual arts shop, among others. The most common floor, however, is concrete that requires the appropriate type, number of coats and colour of paint.

Keep in mind that bare concrete is unsuitable for any kind of workshop mainly because of its porous nature. Every stain, dirt and grime from paints, oils and fuels can easily become embedded in concrete, which also makes it next to impossible to clean via standard means like mopping.

For workshop floor paint on concrete surfaces, the most popular choices are acrylic and polyurethane paint. Both have their pros and cons so polyurethane may be best for your needs while acrylic may not – or vice versa. Also, polyurethane paint has higher resistance to abrasions, stains, and chemicals including liquor. This does not mean that acrylic paint is not without its merits because powerful acrylic floor paint is also highly resistant to abrasion and wear and tear. Just ask professionals in the construction business because acrylic paint is their preferred option.

As for cost, acrylic paint is more expensive than polyurethane paint. You may want to consider, too, that polyurethane paint covers more floor square footage for every gallon than its acrylic counterpart.

Which one is the best? Let’s just say that both are the best but you must take into consideration your unique needs and wants in workshop flooring.

Keeping Energy Costs down without Freezing or Sweating

Green economies are more than just tree hugging experiences. Being green means understanding that there are just so many fossil fuel sources left and leaving as small a carbon footprint as possible is good for the ecology. Residential homes are major consumers of energy and it often happens that the heating systems are extremely inefficient. HVAC, the heating and air-conditioning component of the structure, can run on less energy if properly managed. Using a few green strategies can help the HVAC system in the house operate economically without causing any discomfort.

The activity can be as simple as changing the air filter on a routine basis. This task allows air to flow freely and prevents dust buildup in the HVAC system. The heating and cooling ducts of the system found throughout the house, particularly in unused spaces such as attics, can easily be wrapped in insulation and sealed to help reduce energy waste. Instead of relying on the home’s furnace, under floor heating pads can be installed so that only those areas of the room that are actively used will be heated. Programmable thermostats can also be added so that any heat energy coming from the HVAC system is only what is needed.

More dramatic means of controlling energy costs may be the purchase of a new HVAC
system. This can be a fairly expensive job, but there are ways to keep the cost manageable. A collaborative effort between the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy, known as Energy Star, can help a consumer replace a faulty HVAC system with a better one. A home energy audit should be conducted first; to be sure that what is needed is a new HVAC system and not just a few minor adjustments, such as cleaning the existing one. Federal tax credits are available for equipment such as geothermal heat pumps or a solar energy system for the house. There are also state and local energy initiatives that will provide sizable rebates for the purchase of energy efficient HVAC equipment, and a number of other sources for possible financial assistance can be found on the website of Energy Star. The program also reviews various HVAC products with energy efficiency in mind. Any heat pump or air-conditioning unit that has the Energy Star label is one that has passed inspection, and has the capability of reducing the amount of energy used in a home.

It needs to be kept in mind that any costs related to installing new equipment or cleaning existing ones are more than compensated for in the long run. Residents notice that utility bills go down when an energy-efficient refrigerator is installed, or old windows are replaced with newer models.  These cost savings are not just one time affairs. Indeed, they can last for a number of years and new thermostats or heat pumps are selling features of the property if and when the house is put up for sale.

Controlling costs is not just a matter of finances. Fossil fuel emits levels of carbon that pollute
the atmosphere and can harm the environment. Green energy products and strategies are also
part of an effort to reduce the environmental cost of having to use energy. That environment, by the way, is not just the great outdoors. Replacing filters and cleaning out the air systems of the household HVAC means that there is less dust and pollen being spread throughout the house.  Anyone with allergies or asthma notices significant improvement once the cleaning work has been completed. Reducing the size of a carbon footprint definitely helps household finances and at the same time creates a cleaner, greener, environment. The value of using green strategies is therefore high both in financial terms and ecological ones as well.

Starting Bulbs for Holiday Gifts

One great bulb all seem to enjoy is the amaryllis. They have arrived at your local garden centers and are available in starter kits or single bulbs. If you are giving them as gifts you might use the kits but I like the less costly single bulbs. Here is a tip. Open the containers and check the bulbs. Amaryllis seem to be ready to sprout when they arrive at the stores. Some in the kits have well sprouted and too far gone to make good gifts. Put these back on the shelf. Or as we do, buy them for our self but ask for a discount. We have a hard time turning our backs on a struggling bulb.

Starting these bulbs is so simple. Fill the pot with soil. I skip using the peat pellets that come within the kits. I use regular potting soil. Then sink the bulbs down so their very tops are exposed. Then keep them moist but not overly wet.

Start the narcissus by placing three to four bulbs in a 6-inch pot of soil. Again if you use the kits, I fill the pots with soil. Sink the bulbs down so the tops are exposed. Keep them moist and that is it.

Most bulbs should be in bloom in 4 to 6 weeks. I like to give them as gifts while the buds are just opening. It allows the recipient to see some of the growth of the flowers and plant. Bulbs are truly amazing. Why not give them a try?

Getting rid of your old office furniture

Nowadays it is getting more and more difficult to get rid of your old or unwanted office furniture.  Transport, storage and labour costs means that second hand office furniture dealers are less likely to want your old furniture.

Charities have the same problem as well as being restricted by the ever tightening Health and Safety regulations.

Even taking the furniture to the local dump is more difficult nowadays. The charge for commercial waste  seems to escalate geometrically and the limitations on what can be accepted as non hazardous waste makes this method of disposal a very expensive option.

Also the furniture has to completely stripped down into its component parts so that the relevant materials are dumped in the correct places at the refuse site. As you are fully aware , as much material as possible is recycled, which in theory is a good idea, except when the cost of this recycling is so excessive.

Whilst we do not agree with the old practice of just dumping everything in landfill sites and then covering it all up, recycling has to be cost effective.

Even if you had the space we would never advise burning your old furniture, especially not office chairs. Apart from the  “non- green” effect of having a large open bonfire, there could be some very unpleasant chemicals in the furniture which should definitely not be released into the atmosphere

You could try to sell it yourself, as there seems to be a second hand market for just about everything, but you have to face the fact that it is going to take a lot of time and effort for a very small amount of money.

Usually we find that the old stuff needs to be got rid of quickly to make way for the new so spending a few weeks selling of the furniture item by item, is  not an ideal option..

It is obviously easier to get rid of just a few old desks and office chairs, than a whole office full of furniture. When a complete office needs to be cleared the only cost effective way is to ask the supplier of the new furniture to take the old stuff away. There will usually be a charge for this, depending on how much furniture you are buying from them, but the office furniture dealer will be the most cost effective solution to your furniture disposal problem.

They will have the economies of scale and the contacts to get rid of the furniture in an ecological and cost effective way.

But as it is your old furniture just check that they are not just dumping it into the local canal

Flashing the ledger board is critical to the integrity of a deck The correct flashing with the proper profile is seen overlaying the inferior deck flashing that was installed by a non-professional.

Q. I need to install a deck ledger board against a house with wood lap siding. Soon Ill be doing the same on a brick home. What is the proper way to install flashing so I dont get any leaks where the ledger board connects to the house? My online research indicates this could be a serious problem. Something tells me that its very important to get this right.

A. Your research is spot on. Leaks at or around deck ledger boards are a serious issue. A couple of years ago, a new home was being built next door to me. I was stunned when I saw the builder nail a deck ledger board directly to the side of the house. Not only did the builder nail the board directly to the oriented strand board sheathing instead of through-bolting it, as he should have done he also failed to install water membrane behind the ledger board and to install flashing. Its a shame that many young carpenters, builders and homeowners dont connect the dots about how the exterior finishing material on a home be it wood, brick, stone, vinyl or what have you needs to act just like shingles on a roof. Traditional asphalt shingles keep you dry inside because one shingle overlaps another as they march up the roof.


A deck ledger board needs to do the same thing. It needs to be just one more component in a waterproof assembly on the side of a home. The trouble is that it takes some skill to make this happen. In the case of your wood siding, its not too tough. Stop and think about how wood lap siding works to keep your walls dry. Each horizontal siding piece overlaps the one below it so that water, as it falls, cant get behind the outer skin of your home. You need to use flashings to achieve the same overlapping effect where the deck ledger board connects to the house. Before we continue, lets discuss materials. There are new flexible membrane flashings that may make the job easier for you. I prefer metal flashing, because I know it will work and is much tougher than the membranes. Some of the membranes are sensitive to ultraviolet light, and may break down if they are exposed to sunlight. Be sure you read the product label about exposure to direct sunlight.


Once youve cut away the siding at the deck ledger location, you install a metal or membrane flashing that overlaps the siding below the ledger board. The flashing needs to overlap the siding at least as much as the wood siding did before you cut it away. Whats more, the metal flashing needs to be bent so the bottom 3/8 inch of the flashing kicks away from the house at a 30-degree angle so it doesnt touch the siding. This little kick out allows water flowing over the flashing to turn to droplets that fall to the ground. If you dont do this and the bottom of the flashing is in direct contact with the siding, capillary attraction can pull the water up so it leaks behind the siding. This first piece of flashing needs to extend up at least 2 inches behind the deck ledger board. You then attach the ledger board to the wall using approved through bolts, not lag bolts. Drill the holes through the ledger board the exact same diameter as the shank of the bolt so that its a tight fit. Use a heavy rubber flat washer that will get sandwiched between the ledger board and the metal washer thats under the head of the bolt. Once the bolt is tightened, the rubber washer will produce a waterproof connection at each hole. A second flashing now needs to be installed over the top of the ledger board. This flashing needs to extend up at least 2 or 3 inches up under the siding above the deck. Keep in mind the bottom of the upper siding should be at least two inches above the flashing or the decking thats near the house. Never put horizontal siding in direct contact with any horizontal material. This upper flashing must extend over the top of the ledger board, down the face of the ledger perhaps -inch and then kick away from the front face of the ledger board. Bend the metal so it has the 30-degree angle so water turns to drops on the edge of the metal and is not pulled up by capillary attraction. The top of the deck joists that connect to the ledger board have to have a minor fire cut put into the top corner of the joist where it connects to the ledger. This 45-degree cut does not weaken the joist at all and it prevents the joist from crushing the metal where you have bent it so it doesnt touch the ledger board. This fire cut is mission critical.

This flashing method works for brick or stone homes as well. The only problem is that the upper flashing needs to be inserted into a mortar joint up on the brick above the ledger board. Youll have to use a chisel or a grinder to remove the mortar at least -inch deep. I prefer to use 40-pound tin flashing for this work because its easy to solder it when you need to install long lengths. You cant just overlap the metal and hope it wont leak. Where two pieces of flashing connect or overlap, you need to solder that joint to make one continuous piece of flashing.
