The end of summer is almost here but that doesn’t mean that it’s too early to start thinking about spring. In fact, fall is the perfect season to plant spring-flowering bulbs! That’s exactly why the Martha Stewart Living™ bulb collection recently made its debut in The Home Depot Garden Center.

The new bulb collection is available online and in select stores. The collection offers a Cut Flowers category with bulbs best suited to create indoor arrangements, as well as outdoor arrangements including Border, Deer-Resistant and Fragrant bulb categories.

When planting bulbs in the fall for a stunning spring display, it’s important to consider the following questions:

Which Ones?

For best results be sure to choose bulb varieties suited to your region’s growing conditions. But no matter your region, it’s important to look for bulbs that are firm with a protective papery covering. Also, don’t forget that bigger bulbs tend to produce bigger blooms and choosing a combination of early, late and mid-season varieties create visually pleasing garden designs all season long.

When?

Spring-flowering bulbs, like tulips and daffodils, must be planted in the fall because they need a period of cold to trigger the biochemical process that causes them to bloom. Planting time is typically from mid-September to mid-October, or when nighttime temperatures have stayed below 55° F for a few weeks.

Where?

Spring-blooming bulbs usually prefer sunny locations but you can also plant them under deciduous trees, like maple, oak and birch, because these trees will still be leafless in the springtime so there will be plenty of sunlight for your bulbs.

 How?

When planting your bulbs be sure to plant them in well-drained soil and add organic matter such as compost or peat to the soil. You should also plant the pointy end of the bulb up, and place them in groups of 5 to 9 for maximum visual impact.  Follow the label directions for proper planting depth. It’s also helpful to add slow-release bulb food when planting to help rejuvenate the bulbs after they have bloomed.
